Diabetes & Covid-19

Due to the recent Coronavirus pandemic and its call for social distancing and shelter in place it is important that our diabetic friends practice preparation. It is advised that individuals keep on hand a 90 day supply of necessary insulin and medications. Diabetic individuals should also ensure they have an adequate supply of healthy groceries and nutrition.

The CDC has determined that COVID-19 can impose even more serious health implications in those with underlying chronic conditions including diabetes. Those with type 1 diabetes are also at increased risk for developing diabetic ketoacidosis while combatting a viral infection such as COVID-19 . It is especially important for these individuals to manage their fluid and electrolyte intake.

If you suspect you are suffering from symptoms of COVID-19 such as ; dry cough, fever, and shortness of breath be sure to call your medical provider and have the following information readily available to them;

  • Glucose reading
  • Ketone reading
  • Fluid consumption

Take extra measures to decrease risk of exposure to the virus and stay home as much as possible. Practice regular hand-washing and social distancing between individuals.
